Angel Manuel Soto was later brought on board as director in February 2021 for its release on the streaming service HBO Max. In August of the same year, Xolo Maridueña was cast as the lead. However, plans for the film’s release shifted, and it was decided to give it a theatrical release in December.
Additional casting took place early in 2022, and filming commenced from late May to mid-July in various locations including the Atlanta metropolitan area at Wilder Studios in Decatur, Georgia, as well as El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico. Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters in the United States on August 18, 2023, and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
