Different Between Minimum Wage and National Living Wage

The National Minimum Wage actually only applies to people above school leaving age but under 23. Anybody aged 23 or over now receives the “National Living Wage” under a system founded earlier this year. The National Living Wage was presented in April 2016, but for its first five years used only for people aged 25 or over, with a different minimum wage for 21 to 22-year-olds.

  • The minimum wage for apprentices is based on people aged under 19.
  • Or people over 19 but in the first year of their apprenticeship.
  • If apprentices are above 19 and have completed the first year of their apprenticeship they are qualified for the minimum wage of their age group.
  • Anybody aged 23 or over now receives the “National Living Wage”

When Minimum Wage Increases Are Paid?

There are times when workers will be entitled to a higher minimum wage rate.

Example:

  • If the Government Increases the Rates.
  • If a Worker turns 18, 21 or 23.
  • If an apprentice is 19 years old. Or the end of the first year of their current apprenticeship.

The higher rate begins to apply from the next ‘pay reference period’ after the increase. This means somebody’s pay might not go up directly away.

Example:

There’s a minimum wage rate growth on 1 April. Jack gets paid monthly on the 15th of the month. The old rate will apply until Jack’s following pay reference period begins on 16 April.

As a minimum, Jack should get paid: The old rate for 1 April to 15 April and the new rate for 16 April to 15 May.

  • You are getting paid the National Minimum Wage/National Living Wage.
  • You have been paid correctly in previous years.

On average, you must get the minimum wage for each ‘pay reference period’. You work out your average hourly rate using:

  • Your total (‘gross’) pay per time you’re paid.
  • How many hours you performed for that pay.

For example:

You work 40 hours a week. Your weekly salary is £360. You’re 24 years old. You are not an apprentice. Your average hourly rate is £9. This is further the minimum wage for an employee aged 24.
